For a long time, I thought the pivotal moment of healing was moving on. And although I’m sure a lot of it has to do with the capacity of not being consumed by the trauma and instead digesting it and not holding on to it as part of our identity, transmuting trauma into a catalyst that makes us stronger, more resilient, and understanding, empowers our past struggles for positive change, personal development and a more fulfilling life.
Take for instance a corrupt file in our computer. We can’t seem to file it until we process it. Trauma in our brain works like those files. I have found that we often unconsciously recreate memories or those corrupt files resurface when we don’t process them and simply “let it go“. Our emotions and feelings also require processing for true healing and well-being.
Trauma works in funny ways. Like the song ”Sweet Dreams” –
Everybody’s looking for something,
Some of them want to use you,
Some of them want to get used by you,
Some of them want to abuse you,
Some of them want to be abused
But trauma is not something meant to be clutched on to but rather released and healed.
Here are 4 myths and 4 truths about healing that you should know. It’s certainly isn’t neat but worth thinking about on your journey to becoming a better you.
MYTHS ABOUT HEALING
- Forgiveness as a prerequisite for healing • What if forgiveness is actually a compassion that arises organically when given the space and supported enough to feel safe and integrate our stories?
- The necessity of letting go completely • Must we detach from our experiences to find peace? Perhaps true healing involves embracing all aspects of our journey and owning it.
- Belief that resolving an issue eliminates all future emotions • This might happen when you are dead but life is a series of highs and lows, and experiencing emotions is a part of being alive, not a setback in the healing process. To feel does not mean to fail in the continuous healing process.
- Therapists as perfect individuals • It’s important to remember that therapists are human too, with their own lives, emotions, and personal stories.
TRUTHS ABOUT HEALING
- The healing process is chaotic and non-linear, akin to sorting through a disorganized room and deliberately deciding where each item belongs.
- No single approach works for everyone. Building trust and a strong connection with your healthcare providers is essential.
- Trauma manifests in the body, emphasizing the importance of developing a positive connection with your physical being as a fundamental aspect of healing.
- Discovering the resources that best fit your needs-whether in the form of community support, treatment plans, healthcare providers, or practitioners-is ultimately your responsibility.
You are not broken. You are important. Healing is worth it and a life long journey to embrace to truly live fully.
